Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)
An Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) is an attached or detached subordinate dwelling unit located on a lot which contains a single-family or multi-family dwelling. It shall include provisions for living, eating, sleeping, cooking, and sanitation. An ADU may include an efficiency unit or manufactured home, but is not considered an accessory building.
A Junior ADU is no more than 500 sq. ft. in size and is contained entirely within an existing single-family structure. A junior ADU may include separate sanitation facilities, or may share sanitation facilities with the existing structure.
The City of San Ramon allows ADUs and Junior ADUs subject to specific Zoning Ordinance standards (Zoning Ordinance section D4-39) and review and approval by the City. For more information, please review the Zoning Ordinance section D4-39, brochure, and submittal requirement list below:
Please contact the Planning Services Division at (925) 973-2560 or at [email protected] if you have any questions about the submittal requirements or the review process.
