The San Ramon Police Department has a well established volunteer program. The Volunteer Services unit has three main volunteer programs: V.I.P.S., Chaplains, and Explorers.
VOLUNTEERS
The Volunteers in Police Services (or VIPS) consists of citizens who contribute their time and talents to support the San Ramon Police Department and the well-being of our community. Volunteers support and supplement police department services, in non-hazardous duties, to free up police officers and staff to perform other duties and tasks critical for public safety. Some of the tasks undertaken by VIPS members include the following:
- Helping with special events, such as the Art & Wind Festival, National Night Out, various charity runs, and other community events
- Collecting emergency contact information from local business owners to be entered into the Dispatch Center’s computer system
- Acting as Neighborhood Patrols to look for homes whose owners need to be notified of conditions which may invite crimes against their properties and doing vacation house checks
- Helping in the front office at the police department with administrative work, answering phones, and fingerprinting
- Working with the detectives and the Youth Resource Officer
- Helping with the Neighborhood Watch program, Tours of the Police Department and the Community Academy
- Serving as translators in various languages
Volunteers are recruited from citizens who have completed the Community Academy, which gives them a basic understanding of police work. The volunteers are a valuable daily resource for the police department. For more information, contact the Volunteer Coordinator Kelli Bryson at [email protected].
