Letter from the City Manager

Dear San Ramon Residents,

We need your input as the City of San Ramon makes important decisions for the future.

As a City, our goal is to provide essential public services that the San Ramon community needs and values. We have a proud history of financial prudence. Over the past 10 years, without creating an extra burden on our community, we have:

  • Funded the Iron Horse Trail Overcrossing at Bollinger Canyon Road
  • Constructed the City’s Joint Public Safety Facility
  • Built San Ramon’s new City Hall
  • Fully funded City pension obligations
  • Provided city services with increasing efficiency to help maintain San Ramon’s high quality of life

The City’s responsible budgetary practices have helped us provide high-quality services and earned awards for fiscal prudence. However, with rising operating costs and other financial pressures, maintaining a balanced budget has become a growing burden.

Mindful of our goals to maintain both excellent service and financial stability, we are prioritizing maintaining existing service levels, minimizing impact to General Fund reserves, and preserving infrastructure maintenance funds.

Even so, revenue growth has not matched the growing cost of providing City services, and many Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs) continue to remain unfunded. To guide City decision-making, we have identified a set of essential quality-of-life indicators. The City is working hard to address these priority needs. We are exploring options to address City needs responsibly and with community support.

One option under consideration is asking voters to support a modest increase to the city’s local sales tax on the November 2024 ballot. I want to stress that no decisions have been made yet and we are only exploring options.
