Accessory Dwelling Units
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) and Junior Accessory Dwelling Units (JADUs) are known by many names: granny flats, in-law units, backyard cottages, secondary units and more. No matter what you call them, ADUs offer an inexpensive way to create smaller, more affordable housing units that may provide revenue streams for you, while increasing the availability of housing in the City. Recent changes in State law related to ADUs took effect on January 1, 2020 and have created more opportunities to build ADUs in San Ramon.
ADUs are defined as an attached or detached dwelling unit located on a residential lot. It must include a minimum living area, bathroom and cooking facility. ADUs are subject to maximum development and parking standards which can vary depending on the location and type of unit. If an ADU meets design and development standards, it can be approved through the issuance of a building permit. To learn more about ADUs, contact the Community Development Department: planning@sanramon.ca.gov or (925) 973-2560.
