Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. Pickleball is a mix between tennis, racquetball and ping pong. Players use special paddles and a wiffle ball, and games can take place indoors or outdoors. Nets and court sizes are smaller than their tennis counterparts, and the most common game is doubles. Pickleball is social, and you typically see a large mix of demographics out on the courts. The game is quick, making it a convenient way to get in some exercise. Games typically run only 15 minutes each, allowing you to get in as little or as much as you want. Pickleball is a great family sport, too.

Pickleball is available through the City's Open Gym program every Sunday from 4:30-7:30pm at Iron Horse Community Gym. On Sunday, September 15 the Parks & Community Services Department launched the new Pickleball drop-in program. A training session was held prior to opening where Parks & Community Services staff had fun learning how to set-up courts and play the game.

Eight Pickleball courts were available, providing three recreational/beginner’s courts, three competitive/advanced courts and two courts for new people to the sport. Two USA Pickleball Association Ambassadors were onsite to provide lessons and answer questions about the sport. 64 people participated on the first day of the program. There was a mix of curious community members who wanted to try something new, to the more experienced competitive players.
