I-680 Auxiliary Lane Improvement Project What is an Auxiliary Lane? Auxiliary lanes are lanes that run along the freeway from on-ramp of one interchange to the off-ramp of the next, but do not continue through the interchange area. Auxiliary lanes improve traffic flow and reduce congestion by eliminating back-ups that occur when cars merge on and off the freeway between interchanges. They also enable local traffic to use the freeway without entering the main traffic flow. The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), Caltrans, the Town of Danville and the City of San Ramon are pleased to announce that substantial progress has been made on I-680 Auxiliary Lanes Improvement Project. The new auxiliary lanes on I-680 in San Ramon between Bollinger Canyon Road and Crow Canyon Road, as well as in Danville between Diablo Road and Sycamore Valley Road have already been opened to traffic. In addition, pedestrian access along the Iron Horse Trail at Laurel Drive in Danville has been restored and the detour has been removed. The landscaping construction is expected to be completed in May 2008 with a five-year Plant Establishment Period to follow. The term of the Agreement should be extended to provide the required construction management services for the landscaping construction and at least the first year of the total Plant Establishment Period. Staff recommends extending the term of Agreement No. 199 to June 30, 2009. Budget to perform this task is already included in the Agreement.
