Universal Waste
It is illegal to dispose of universal waste with regular
trash. Universal waste includes Household Batteries, Fluorescent Bulbs, Mercury
Thermometers and many Electronic Devices (including but not necessarily limited
to: Computers, Printers,
Microwave Ovens, VCRs, Radios, Cordless Telephones, Cellular Telephones and
Answering Machines). Residents and small businesses can dispose of
batteries and florescent tubes/bulbs at our Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Facility in Martinez. For more information please visit

Disposal of Batteries In response to the new regulations the City of San Ramon has placed battery buckets at convenient locations where residents can drop off small amounts of household batteries. These buckets are located at the San Ramon Library, Community Center, Senior Center, Police Department, City Offices, Dougherty Station Community Center, Dougherty Station Library, Forest Home Farms, and the Crow Canyon Gardens. Another convenient
location to drop off these materials is the City of San Ramon’s local
Orchard Supply Hardware (OSH) store located at
1041 Market pl, San Ramon, 94583 - (925) 275-1095 NEW HOUSEHOLD BATTERY RECYCLING PROGRAM Starting December 3, 2006, San Ramon residents will be able to drop off their single-use household batteries at the Longs Drugs Store in San Ramon located at 2455 San Ramon Valley Blvd. The store will maintain a battery bucket inside the store, usually at the camera counter. Pacific Rim Recycling, a local recycling company, will collect the buckets weekly. Earlier this year, it became illegal in California to toss batteries in the garbage. The City is now partnering with Contra Costa County Solid Waste Authority in to provide convenient recycling. All single-use batteries will be accepted. These include batteries used, for example, in flashlights, toys, cameras, and hearing aids (i.e., A, AA, AAA, C, D, and 9V). Rechargeable batteries, such as those used in cell phones, power tools, and digital cameras, will not be accepted. However, rechargeable batteries may be recycled at any store that sells them. The recycling buckets will be in place just in time for the biggest shopping and gift-giving time of the year. City of San Ramon residents and businesses are eligible to use the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District Hazardous Waste Collection Facility located at 4797 Imhoff Place, Martinez. Hazardous waste generated from households in the central Contra Costa County area will be accepted at no charge.
