Acceptable Recyclable Materials for Your Recycling Container
Click here to download a flyer you can print and keep near your garbage can

Before placing the containers inside the curbside recycling cart, make sure each container is empty and clean.  Remove caps, corks, lids and/or spraying apparatus and discard as trash.  You will get the most out of the space in your cart if you crush plastic containers and metal cans.  It is not necessary to remove labels.  Acceptable containers include:

All empty plastic containers if not used for hazardous materials
Examples include milk, water and health & beauty product containers, margarine and yogurt tubs, baby wipes containers, etc.

bottle recyclingGlass Bottles & Jars
Clear and colored bottles and jars from food and beverages are acceptable.  Typical acceptable glass are bottles and jars from juice, condiments, soda, beer and wine.  No other glass (such as light bulbs, cookware, plates, ceramics or mirrors) is acceptable.

Metal Food & Beverage Cans
Cans from soda, beer, tuna, coffee, soup, beans, etc. are acceptable.  No aluminum foil or pie tins, though, as these have a different chemical composition than the aluminum cans!

Paper (fiber) Recyclables
Acceptable recyclables for the paper side of the cart include:

Newspaper Simply collect and place loose newspaper in the cart
Corrugated Cardboard (non-waxed) Please empty all contents, then cut cardboard into flat pieces no larger than 18" X 18" so that they do not wedge inside and will fall freely out of the cart when it is emptied
Chipboard This includes cereal and other similar food boxes, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and household product boxes, facial tissue boxes, shoe boxes, toilet tissue and paper towel rolls. (Remove any plastic covers or liners, Styrofoam, any non-paper components)
Aseptic drink boxes  These are the plastic-coated beverage boxes.  (Empty liquid and discard straws)
Gable-top cartons These are the milk and juice cartons.  (Rinse and flatten)
White & colored paper Any ledger paper normally used in business or for letters and notes
Junk mail & envelopes  (Be sure to remove any product samples, plastic or foil inserts, and wrappers and discard as trash -- cellophane envelope widows are OK.)
Paper grocery bags (Remember - paper only, no plastic bags accepted!)
Magazines, catalogs and telephone books (Remove plastic wrap and discard as trash)

If you regularly overfill your 64-gallon container, you may trade it in for a 96-gallon container cart at no extra charge.

motor oilUsed Motor Oil and Oil Filters
Collected at the curb on the regularly scheduled collection day.  On a weekly basis, you may place up to two, 1-gallon jugs containing used motor oil at your curbside. Only jugs provided by Valley Waste Management (at no extra charge) will be accepted.  Please call 837-3356 if you would like to order a set of one-gallon jugs.  The oil collected is recycled - it is cleaned and re-used.

On your collection day, you may place no more than two oil filters inside one plastic sealed bag provided by Valley Waste Management.

Please note that the hauler has the right to refuse pick-up if contamination of the used oil with other materials is suspected.  If pick-up is refused, call the Central Contra Costa Sanitary District’s Household Hazardous Waste program at 1-800-646-1431.  For more information visit our Household Hazardous Waste page.
