RECYCLING IS THE LAW IN CALIFORNIA
With the passage of Assembly Bill 341(Chapter 476, Statutes of 2011 [Chesbro, AB 341]), California is one of the first states in the nation to enact a statewide program to conserve natural resources by diverting commercial solid waste from landfills. All businesses and public entities in California that subscribe to four or more cubic yards of garbage service per week are required by State law to implement a recycling program. For more information about AB 341, please visit CalRecycle’s website.
YOUR BUSINESS MAY ALREADY BE IN COMPLIANCE
Most businesses in San Ramon are already in compliance with the new law. If your business is already recycling then you are in compliance. Thank you for recycling. If your business subscribes to less than four cubic yards of garbage service per week then you are not subject to this recycling requirement. Contact Waste Management at 925-837-3356 to verify or reduce your level of garbage service.
TENANTS IN OFFICE BUILDINGS AND STRIP MALLS CAN SHARE RECYCLING SERVICES
In an office building or a strip mall with multiple businesses, if the complex as a whole generates four or more cubic yards per week of garbage, then the individual businesses in that complex are required to recycle. Property managers and tenants should work together to ensure successful recycling program implementation by each business in the complex. Often property managers arrange for recycling services for their tenants.
RECYCLING CAN SAVE MONEY
Even if your business has to pay for recycling services, you may be able to reduce your overall cost by decreasing your garbage service.
BE RECOGNIZED AS A GREEN BUSINESS
Get the credit you deserve for your efforts to protect the environment. San Ramon businesses that recycle, reduce their waste, buy recycled materials, use non-toxic products, and conserve water and energy can be certified and advertised as Green Businesses through the Contra Costa County Green Business Program.
SAN RAMON BUSINESSES HAVE A CHOICE
You can recycle by taking your materials to a recycling center or you can hire one of the permitted recycling companies listed below to collect recyclables from your property. Please note that there is often a charge for commercial recyclables collection service. The City of San Ramon does not set the rates charged by the recycling companies. The City encourages businesses to request price quotes from at least two different companies to ensure that you obtain competitive pricing.
The following categories of materials are collected for recycling. The categories collected by each permitted recycling company are indicated below. The specific materials accepted and how they must be separated may vary depending upon which recycling company you select. The types of collection containers available will vary as well. Some recyclers may collect additional materials not listed.
Commercial Recyclables: Cardboard, paper, bottles (plastic and glass) and cans (aluminum and tin/steel.) The same types of materials typically recycled at home. ** NEW in 2016 ** Commercial customers can obtain up to one cubic yard per week of commercial recyclables collection from Waste Management at no additional charge. Call (925) 837-3356 to initiate service.
Construction Debris: Discarded materials from construction, demolition, or remodeling projects such as wood, metal, cardboard, sheet rock, tile, shingles, concrete, asphalt, and soil.
Yard Trimmings and Wood: Grass, leaves, weeds, clippings, prunings, branches, clean lumber, wooden pallets, etc. Typically wood must be untreated and free of paint or stain to be recycled. Sometimes wood is collected separately from yard trimmings and sometimes they are mixed together. These materials are usually collected in the type of large roll-off “dumpsters” used at construction sites. All of the recyclers listed below can collect yard trimmings and wood.
Food Scraps: Fruits, vegetables, meat, grains, etc. Food scraps are often collected mixed with yard trimmings and with soiled paper products (paper towels, napkins, cups, plates, take-out boxes, trays, placemats, etc.) just as they are at home. As of April 2016, State law (AB 1826) requires all businesses that generate 8 or more cubic yards per week of organic waste (food scraps, soiled paper products, yard trimmings, clean wood) to arrange for organic waste recycling services. ** NEW in 2016 ** Commercial customers can obtain up to 96 gallons per week of commercial organics composting service from Waste Management at no additional charge. Call (925) 837-3356 to initiate service. Higher levels of composting service are available from Waste Management for half the cost of garbage service.
