Procedures
How to identify Suspicious
Letters and Packages:
-
Excessive postage
-
Handwritten or poorly
typed addresses
-
Incorrect titles
-
Title, but no name
-
Misspellings of common
words
-
Oily stains,
discolorations, or odors
-
No return address
-
Excessive weight
-
Protruding wires or
aluminum foil
-
Lopsided or uneven
envelope or package
-
Excessive security
material such as tape, string, etc..
-
Visual distractions
-
Ticking sound
-
Marked with words
"Personal" or "Confidential"
-
Shows a city or state in
the postmark that does not match the return address
-
Powdery substance felt
through or appearing on the package or envelope
What to do if you suspect a
letter or package is tainted:
-
Treat item as a hazardous
material.
-
Do
not open, shake, sniff, touch, taste, or look closely at the contents.
-
Put item down
-
Place something over it
(e.g. trash can, paper, etc...)
-
LEAVE the room and CLOSE
the door.
-
Isolate the area and deny
entry
-
Immediately wash your
hands with soap and water.
-
Promptly call 973-2779
-
Make a list of all persons
who were in the room when the item was identified as being suspicious
