Residential Burglary Prevention

An important way to prevent your home from being burglarized is to remember to ALWAYS ANSWER THE DOOR. Many people do not acknowledge a stranger or solicitor knocking on the front door. This can result in a traumatizing event should the stranger think no one is at home and decides to break in. You do not have open the door, but it is imperative that you acknowledge the person on the other side of the door. A simple “I am sorry I am not interested in anything you are selling” should suffice. For latch key kids who are home alone, it is important to empower your child to do the same. We suggest working out a script that works for your family. A great one to use is “I am sorry, I cannot answer the door right now as my dad is on a conference call. Can you come back later?” This lets the person know on the other side of the door that there are many people in the home including an adult. If this is a suspicious person, they will not return. ‚Äč
