Business Planning and Development Resources Contra Costa County Library, San Ramon Branch The Contra Costa County Library Business Connection Web Site is designed to help local entrepreneurs and the small business community connect more easily with the information they need and with each other. Contra Costa County Library’s new resources for small businesses include materials on marketing, business plans, start-ups, and the ReferenceUSA database. ReferenceUSA is a market research database that allows people to search every U.S. business by geographic location, size and type of business. The library also holds workshops for small businesses. Workshop topics have included "Market Research for Small Businesses" and "Best Marketing Practices to Build Your Business." In September 2005, the new Dougherty Station Library is expected to open. This new library will be 11,600 square feet and will incorporate the newest technology, including automated check-in/out systems. The library will feature 40 public computers with Internet access. The Dougherty Station library will be operated as a branch of the main San Ramon Library with oversight provided by the Contra Costa Library system. Contra Costa Small Business Development Center The Contra Costa Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a business management consulting and training organization, providing assistance to business owners throughout Contra Costa County who have up to 20 employees. They have a staff of professional consultants who assist small business owners on a variety of business management issues. The consulting service is free to the small business client. The SBDC’s team of professional staff consultants consist of specialists in the following areas: business analysis and management, business planning, market research, marketing, finance, selling to the government, human resources and technology. The SBDC offers training on a variety of business management topics. There is a modest fee for this service. For beginning and emerging business owners, the SBDC offers an intensive 12-week entrepreneurial training class, New Venture Training. This program focuses on the development of a business plan while providing 100 hours of basic business education. Short-term training sessions are offered for existing business owners. The Contra Costa SBDC is part of a national U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) partnership program. Sponsorship from local organizations makes the consulting and training services possible. These sponsors include the Workforce Development Board of Contra Costa County; the City of Pittsburg, and Community Development Block Grants from Antioch, Contra Costa County; Concord and Walnut Creek. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) The IRS website is a one stop resource of tax information for small businesses and those who are self employed.
